CBD, abbreviation for cannabidiolis a trendy ingredient in the natural products industry and is the subject of a new area of cannabis research. CBD is one of many cannabinoidsor molecules produced only by the cannabis family.
Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THCthe main psychoactive component of marijuana), CBD is non-psychoactive, which means that it does not have a significant effect on thebrain's cognitive activity and doesn't cause the high associated with marijuana.
Each variety of the cannabis family produces cannabinoids, including hemp. If CBD and THC are the best known cannabinoids, there are many different types, and only recently have significant resources been devoted to their study.
Our brain has specific receptors designed to accept cannabinoids, known as CB1 and CB2. These receptors are responsible for the uptake of cannabinoid molecules into your system, which leads to the psychoactive and immune responses associated with cannabis use.
In recent years, much progress has been made in methods of treating and consuming cannabis. Concentrated products such as oil and rosin (a product similar to sap extracted by heat and pressure) have made it possible to generalize the use of methods ingestion cleaner, such as the vaporization. These new technologies have resulted in more consistent and identifiable dosages for patients and hobbyists, while potentially allowing safer methods of consumption. Finally, more precise and detailed studies on the effects and consumption of cannabis are under way, as prohibition continues to be challenged.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that CBD is good for treating malaise and diseases of all kinds. People suffering anxietyof pains, epileptic and cancer praise the CBD molecule. But the largely banned status of cannabis has prevented many long-term, academically rigorous studies of most cannabinoids in isolation, leaving these anecdotal claims largely unverified until recently.
"There is a great deal of interest in the possible therapeutic effects of CBD, but there is very little evidence of its effectiveness," said Dr. J Hampton Atkinson, co-director of the Center for Medical Cannabis Research (CMCR) at the University of California, San Diego. CBD may have health benefits, but the lack of research in this area means there are simply not enough data points to support most anecdotal claims. Similarly, the lack of research also means that the potential health risks of consuming CBD are unclear.
However, now that cannabis is experiencing a renaissance in research through the efforts of legalizationthe science medical gains a much more detailed perspective on this popular and fascinating plant. A federal database of accredited clinical trials around the world, about 150 ongoing trials are testing CBD as a treatment for a wide variety of health problems, including autism, mental illness, depression, and other disorders.alcoholismskin conditions and schizophrenia.. For its part, CMRC is conducting rigorous studies on CBD for its potential to treat schizophrenia and autism.
Some research suggests that the CBD can reduce anxiety and thoughts of self-mockery, and CBD has been shown to have effects antipsychotics in people with schizophrenia. But other studies show no significant advantage of CBD over placebo.
Scientific observation takes time, and the research community is just beginning to conduct scientific investigations into the distinct effects of different cannabinoids. That said, many researchers believe that the potential of the CBD is promising.
