When you're at the table having a glass of wine with your friends or family, you may guess how you'll feel the next day, but you don't really care. Nice discussions, good humour, a good atmosphere, of course, will lead you to drink more, which will lead to a new hangover. You already know the drill; have some coffee, fatty food and maybe some aspirin. But at some point these old tricks don't work anymore. What can you do then? In fact, you may have heard about it already! Whether you've heard of it or not, we are happy to (re)introduce you to CBD oil !
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A HANGOVER?
Before we begin to explore how CBD could help with hangovers, we should all be on the same page about what a hangover really is. Specifically, we need to describe the symptoms.
What's the first thing you hear when you wake up with a hangover? "Oh, my head! ». Headaches, along with muscle aches, are probably the most common and frequent hangover symptoms. You may, however, hear the person vomit before saying anything, as nausea and stomach aches follow closely. He or she may also sleep poorly and feel tired and moody. She may also be restless, feel very thirsty, have a fast heartbeat and be sensitive to light and sound.
Because of these problems, they probably won't be able to concentrate at work, or even in conversation. Symptoms should subside within a few hours of waking up, which shouldn't spoil your whole day. On the other hand, if you really suffered the night before, you may be out of action for the next 24 hours.
CAN CBD OIL PREVENT A HANGOVER?
Now that you've mentally relived your worst hangover, you're probably wondering if CBD oil can prevent the next one? To answer that question, we need to look at some science behind CBD.
Essentially, it works by supporting the function of the endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for keeping many of our physiological functions in balance. That said, will taking CBD oil and alcohol at the same time keep you balanced enough to avoid a hangover? Unfortunately, that's not quite the way it works.
Now, not that it's dangerous to take them at the same time. In fact, a 1979 study on the interaction between CBD and alcohol showed that the two can be taken together without adverse effects. However, that same study also found no perceptible benefit from the combination. The effects of excessive alcohol consumption were found to outweigh those of the cannabinoid when both were taken at the same time.
WILL CBD OIL HELP RELIEVE THE HANGOVER?
So, no, the CBD won't stop your hangover. But that doesn't mean it won't help ease it. As CBD enthusiasts may have already noticed, this cannabinoid can relieve many of the symptoms we've described earlier.
CDB AND NAUSEUM
We imagine that you don't want to have to face that nausea when you wake up. Luckily, a morning dose of CBD might be just what you need to deal with it. In 2011, using a limited dose range, researchers found that CBD suppresses nausea and vomiting by activating somatodendritic 5-HT1A receptors. However, these results need to be put into context, as the research was conducted in animals. Nevertheless, the interactions observed are clearly promising, and we may see more accurate results in the near future.
CBD AND HEADACHES
In addition to nausea, your headache may also be alleviated by CBD. However, the evidence is a little more uncertain. Specifically, the main source people turn to is a 2017 literature review on the relationship between cannabis and headaches. Although the study does not focus much on CBD in particular, they describe CBD as a TRPV1 agonist. This means, in somewhat less complicated terms, that it may be able to inhibit the pathophysiological causes of headaches.
CBD AND SLEEP
If you're like most people, we bet the only thing you want to do when you're hung over is sleep. But if you're still like most people, it can be hard to fall back into a restful sleep at that time. Fortunately, CBD can give you some answers.
This potential was recently observed in a 2018 study of 72 adults with anxiety and poor sleep habits. After giving them regular 25 mg capsules of CBD, they found that 66 % of the participants had better sleep, with 79 % of them reporting a decrease in their anxiety. Of course, anxiety is a confounding factor, and we don't know if their sleep improved just because their anxiety improved. In any case, as the conclusion says, we need to see the results of controlled clinical studies before we go any further.
